New Signing: Kate & Anna McGarrigle

peermusic has closed a worldwide deal to exclusively administer the music publishing interests of legendary Canadian singer/songwriters Kate and Anna McGarrigle, as announced today by Neville Quinlan, Managing Director, peermusic Canada. 

For forty years, the songs and recordings of Kate and Anna McGarrigle, in both English and French, have been enjoyed by devoted fans around the world. Among the artists who have recorded their songs are Linda RonstadtMaria Muldaur,Emmylou HarrisBilly BraggKirsty MacColl, Rufus Wainwright and DidoAnne Sofie von Otter and Elvis Costello, Martha WainwrightPink Martini (with Rufus W. and the Von Trapp family) and the Pet Shop Boys. Some of their best-known titles are: "Heart Like a Wheel," "Talk to Me of Mendocino," “Goin’ Back to Harlan,” "Complainte pour Ste. Catherine," "Love Over and Over," "NaCl" (Sodium Chloride Song) "Entre Lajeunesse et la sagesse," "Heartbeats Accelerating,  "I Eat Dinner,"   "On My Way to Town,” "I Cried for Us" and "Proserpina." 

The McGarrigle sisters received the ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in Folk Music in 2005 and were honored with the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2006. Kate and Anna McGarrigle pursued their careers as singer-songwriters and musicians until Kate’s passing in 2010. Also, Kate and Anna received the Order of Canada in 1994 and the Governor General Award in 2004. They sang Wade Hemsworth's "The Log Driver's Waltz" for the National Film Board of Canada's most popular animated short ever by filmmaker John F. Weldon.

Kate and Anna emerged as popular folk performers in Canada in the 1970s and, after Maria Muldaur and Linda Ronstadt began recording their songs, Kate and Anna signed with Warner Bros. and issued their own landmark debut in 1976, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. They wrote and recorded ten albums from 1975 through 2008, including critically acclaimed albums Matapedia (1996), The McGarrigle Hour (1998), Love Over and Over (1982), and Entre Lajuenesse et la sagesse (1980).

The McGarrigle legacy lives on in their songs and also in the next generation of songwriters in their families, through Kate’s children, Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright, and Anna’s children, Lily Lanken and Sylvan Lanken.

The signing of the song catalogue of Kate & Anna McGarrigle comes right as peermusic is celebrating its 90th anniversary as a company.
